Ten Questions 035 – Si Scott

May 22nd, 2013 by Mat Dolphin

Si Scott is an illustrator best known for his amazingly detailed and elaborate typography and decorative hand-drawn renderings of animals. His work has a unique style of it’s own and his reputation has earned him an impressive client list including Nike, Coca-Cola, Adidas, Channel 4, Converse, GAP, Hugo Boss, Vogue, Wallpaper Magazine… The list goes on. He’s also a visiting lecturer at Leeds College of Art & Design and has exhibited his work at various institutions around the world including Tokyo, New York, Brazil and Sydney.

We’ve been big fans of his work for some time now and are very pleased to have him on board as part of our Ten Questions series.

1. How do you describe what you do?

I think the best way I’ve heard it described is ‘digitally hand drawn’ – or something along those lines.

2. What made you want to do what you do?

I’ve drawn as long as I can remember and knew from an early age I wanted to do something with drawing or creating things with my hands. I never knew what Graphic Design or Illustration was when I was at school. We certainly weren’t taught about Design at school – it was just ‘Art’. I guess most people from the same generation as me and earlier generations went through the same kind of ‘Art’ lessons as myself – drawing crushed fizzy pop cans and sheep skulls etc… It wasn’t until I left school and went straight to college that the whole world of Design & Illustration opened up for me.

3. How would you describe your workplace?

Fortress of Solitude

4. What is your favourite colour?

Dark Blue

5. Who is your favourite artist or writer?

The Chapman Brothers (Artists) I couldn’t really name a favourite writer as I like so many different books (mostly factual).

6. What was your previous job?

Graphic Designer / Art Director

7. Do you work within a team? If so, how many people do you work with?

I guess I do in a way – although day to day I work on my own. I have agents and a creative studio manager who all work remotely to myself.

8. Do you listen to music whilst working? If so, what do you listen to?

Far too much to mention here – we’d be here all week if I were to list them.

9. Who inspires you to do what you’re doing?

Music and just the love of doing it I guess.

10. Which advice has helped you the most?

You’re no worse, or better than anybody else – don’t worry what they are doing concentrate on what you’re doing and do it to the best of your ability.

We want to say a big thanks to Si for taking the time to answer our questions. As you can tell, he’s a busy man so his involvement is much appreciated.

You can see more of his amazing work here and follow him on Twitter here.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this installment of Ten Questions, thanks for reading.
